My practice started at 18 when my mom introduced me to hot yoga. The heat was invigorating. It energized me long after I left the studio. Being a thin kid, the gym environment made me feel uncomfortable. Yoga did the opposite. I could hit every pose with little coaching.
Once college came around, I fell off the wagon for a few years. Hot yoga was not in the college student budget. There were room temperature options on campus, but without the sweating I wasn’t fulfilled in my practice.
Now almost 10 years later, I rediscovered yoga. Being a thin adult, the gym environment still brings discomfort, and working a 9 to 5 job leaves little time for self-care if you let it. Yoga at any temperature fulfills me now because it reminds me to connect with my body as well as my mind. It also reminds me that without maintenance, the body and mind tighten up as time goes on.
